WINNIPEG: Vince Lombardi is the most-quoted sage in American football history. Canadian football has Pinball Clemons in Toronto and Wally Buono in B.C.
After Buono’s Lions had their final training session at Canad Inns Stadium on Saturday, he sat down with the media. Some of the pearls of wisdom he offered allowed a glimpse into what makes the CFL’s greatest active coach tick.
On avoiding distractions, including the deluge of media reports heavily favouring the Lions to win the Grey Cup:
“I’ve tried to put myself in a vacuum, I don’t want to be influenced, I’m a big believer that what you breathe in, you breathe out. What your mind takes in affects what you do.”
On his lack of passionate pre-game speech to players (he did his at the start of the week):
“I used to hate when a coach tried to tell me five minutes before a game how important a game was.”
On the lack of controversy during this Grey Cup week:
“Why do we need all that? Why do we need to express a negative when there’s no need to be negative? Let’s enjoy the week, enjoy the festivities. Two great teams are going to play, one’s going to win, one’s going to lose. The team that wins, God bless them. The team that loses, God bless them. It brings the country together, it continues a tradition and it gives you guys (in the media) a job.”

Good quotes.
Wally is a bright man.
It will be intersting to see if he can rally the tropps for tomorrow.
